Day 1 – Wed. November 29
We started our first day with our usual early morning practice in Hamilton, before running to the airport to catch our flight to Montreal. Once in Montreal, we only had time to check in to the hotel, go to the grocery store to get some snacks, and grab a quick dinner before going to the rink to register and get ready for our practice. Our first official practice was a late one! We only had 20 minutes to get our bearings in the competition rink, before tomorrow’s short program! We got everything we wanted to accomplish done, and we are feeling confident for tomorrow!
Our event starts at 8:05 on rink 3, and we are the 6th team to skate. Catch us on the livestream!

Day 2 – Thurs, November 30
Josh’s Day 1, day before competition.
Woke up bright and early to be on the road for 8:30am.
Arrived in Montreal for 10am just in time for a warm up and extra practice ice. Skated with other boys from BC and Alberta.
After practice ice went to the competition rink to check in. Ran into great friends and watched some great skating.
Checked into our hotel and ate some supper.
Off to bed now for 6:30am bus for 7:30am practice.
I skate the short Friday at 1:50pm on Rink 4 – watch live at https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6aditr and Christian’s free skate is at 6:45pm at https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6adim3
Day 3 – Friday, December 1, 2017 — Part 1
Day 3 – Friday, December 1, 2017 — Part 2
Up early to be on the shuttle for 6:30am to be at the rink for 7:20 practice ice.
Back to the hotel for a short rest and to get ready for the short program.
Competed. Some really great elements and some room to improve.
Dinner with fellow Ottawa skaters and back to the hotel to play.
Work hard, play hard.
Time to close the night at 9pm.
I’m up very early tomorrow for 5:30am shuttle and practice ice at 6:20.
Tomorrow is another day. Another fresh start.
After the short program, we were lucky enough to be able to watch the senior pairs event. There were some great teams out there, including national team members Julianne Séguin & Charlie Bilodeau.
Fortunately we didn’t have to get up early the next day, as our long program practice wasn’t until about 12:30pm the next day.
In the long, we skated another personal best program, beating our combined sectionals score by over 7 points! We were very pleased with our progress and happy to see that all the hard training was paying off. This score qualified us in 7th place for nationals! This means we will be travelling with Emma to Vancouver in January for Nationals!! To celebrate, Ben and Darlene and I went out to our favorite pizza spot in Pierrefonds, as we do every time challenge is in Montreal!
On Saturday, I had the day off, so I slept in, and spent the day shopping and wandering around Montreal with Ben. Funny enough, we bumped into Eric Radford on the street, but only had time for a quick chat to wish him luck at the Grand Prix Final next week, before we went to meet my old roommates for dinner!
We even had time for a few pictures in Old Montreal before driving back to Ottawa! Here we are with my old roommates, Niki (Dutch National Skating Champion) and SJ (Korean pair skater).
Challenge was a good building experience for Bella and I, and we are excited for Nationals. We are looking forward to working hard to improve our score and placement, in order to be able to fight our way onto the podium come January. What a great week of skating and adventures!
Until next time,
